Resistor Color Coding

In the present day scenario where most of us have digital gadgetry right in our pockets we tend to forget our basic need for understanding of "Color Coding".

Despite us being able to use the handy multi-meter it is faster and easier to just look and give the ohmic value of the Resistor. Well, here guys we'll be giving you the very famous jargon of color coding which has been in use since time immemorial.
So herez the thing just like we read from left to right, this resistor coding is also done in a similar fashion. The niche is to read it right. Since most of the tolerance band is either gold or silver in color. So keep that to your extreme right and hold it in your hand as depicted in the above figure.

Next comes the calculation part. Pretty easy! Beginning with the first significant color or digit moving on to the next and finally the multiplier. Most people are convenient up to here, but its the values that they get hung upon. To simplify or ease your way through that we have a few famous quotes that help you with memorizing the values.

Here are a few typical ways to learn the list: <choose any one that suits you the best>

  • Big boys race our young girls but Violet generally wins
  •  Big brown rabbits often yield great big vocal groans when gingerly slapped
  • B.B. ROY of Great Britain has Very Good Wife  <This one's really famous in South Indian classrooms>
  • Brave Boys Rave Over Young Girls But Veto Getting Wed .
And many more...you can always google it up to know more of these.
Each letter here represents a COLOR and to each of them we have a factor i.e., for instance if its the first 'B' it stands for black, brown for the second and also for each of these you have a number associated with them.
COLOR                            Number Associated

Black                                          0
Brown                                         1
Red                                             2
Orange                                        3
Yellow                                         4
Green                                          5
Blue                                             6
Violet                                           7
Grey                                            8
White                                           9

THe ForMuLA: -

Ohmic Resistance = (AB)  * 10^C

where A = first significant digit
          B = second significant digit
          C= Multiplier

Hope you get the coding now. To help you out practice better herez a link which helps you to calculate the resistive value online. Click Here for online color coding. Or Most of us have Android or Windows phones these days which also facilitates apps and believe me there are quite a lot out there in the market free of cost to try out!
So see you next time...till then have fun...!
All the best! :)
